Changing your mood, increasing your energy and reducing tension. Posted by Peter Anthony

With the start of another busy year at SAS you are probably feeling the need for all of the above. This interesting article reports on a survey concerning the strategies people find most effective in shaking off a bad mood, increasing energy levels and coping with stress. Reflect on your own strategies and compare them with these findings:

  • Exercise: rated as the most effective for changing a bad mood, also good for raising energy and reducing tension.
  • Music: rated the second most successful way to change a bad mood, and raising energy and reducing tension. This may be a surprising finding for some people.
  • Social interaction: good for changing a bad mood and reducing tension although not necessarily so good for raising energy.

Apart from these main categories that were good across the board, there were other strategies that worked in a more selective fashion:

  • Pep talk: this was rated as most successful for energy enhancement - above both exercise and music.
  • Distractions (like shopping, reading, chores and hobbies): seen as useful for changing a bad mood.

At the other end of the scale, the things people rated as relatively less successful were:

  • TV: less effective for reducing tension
  • Eating: also less effective for reducing tension.
  • Coffee: not that good for raising energy, relative to the other categories.

Though the article itself acknowledges that these strategies are all fairly obvious the point is to practice successful strategies and avoid those that you suspect are useless.

    I strongly agree with the statement that exercise and music can reduce stress and change moods. I personally do it all the time when I’m down or stressed and it helps a lot.

    This is helpful for me because yes this year is busy and stressful. I agree that exercise and music and interactions can relieve stress but I think that TV also works. I remember a few weeks ago on a Saturday I was really stressed out and I watched the tv show “Friends” and it was so funny and my mood improved. And bubble tea also works for me haha.

    The passive ways of relieving stress never worked for me. I tried watching TV after a bad day, but I just felt deeper in doo doo afterwards, because I realized how much time I wasted without actually trying to deal with the problem (most of the time my source of stress is the amount of homework). Usually I exercise or talk to someone who I think will suggest a workable solution.

    Well, I think it depends on how each individual deals with the stress. Watching TV or eating may not be found as the best way of relieving stress according to the studies but if it works for some people it can be the best way for them.
    For me, sleeping really works. Whenever I get really stressed I lose control of my temper. So if a sleep for a while, it relaxes me a little bit and helps me think more carefully.
