I really appreciate that Ashley has such a thoughtful teacher. However, I still have some concerns about the 1:1 computer plan. If students begin to use laptops at school, they will begin to rely on it too much, for they are already using it a lot at home. Facing the screen at school, facing the screen at home... it isn't good for the children's health. It is also a hassle to bring a laptop to school everyday. In addition, not every student can afford a laptop. But Ashley already has a laptop so she can begin to bring it to school if need be.

Even though this sounds like a very good plan, it hasn't been done before at SAS and we cannot know for sure if it will actually be as efficient as it seems.

Regards,
Amy Chao

I agree with your suggestion of using laptops at school. I think that computers are essential for modern society, and so being able to use them efficiently is crucial.

Thank you,
You, Jin Won

Dear Mr Anthony,

We appreciate your effort of bringing up the 1:1 computer proposal. However, we don't agree to it. My very first concern is that the theft problem is already quite bad in school. A laptop will quickly become the most popular item on the lost list, probably not on the found list though. The second concern is its weight. The students' bags are heavy enough. On the learning side, we believe that all high school students are already doing a lot of work using the computer at home, if not at school. They don't have problems catching up with the latest information technology. Accessing information, articles etc. on the internet at the same time during class can be easily done by a desktop in the classroom with a projector. We don't agree to the idea of some students having their own laptops while a few others don't. This will have negative effect on the student's self esteem. Do let me know whether this 1:1 computer thing is already a final decision. If yes, we can only squeeze our already tight budget to buy a new laptop.

Cheers,
Alice & Peter

I agree with the fact that my daughter should bring a laptop to support her learnings. However it would be hard for them to carry them around and bring the chargers just for this class. I will consider weather I will buy Chloe a laptop.

I agree that having laptops is better for the community because of better connectivity and accessibility, and that 1:1 laptops is a good idea. however, this should be thought out well before it actually happens. safety issues, thefts, misuse, that kind of stuff.

Dear Mr Anthony,

I can appreciate the need for 1:1 use of laptops in a classroom enviroment and would support such an initiative. I do however feel that it is important that the students have well developed skills to do their research and asignments in the good old traditional way as without these skills we would limit their abilities in the same way that using laptops would increase them.

I also believe that there should be a set standard for the type of laptop required. As technology races on faster than any of us lesser mortals can keep track of there will always be a newer, faster, better model available. Ideally this shouldn't be a problem, but in the society that we live in, we can't discount the effects of peer pressure amoungst students. These youngsters are under enough pressure to perform as it is, we shouldn't add to it.

Kind regards.

Dear Mr. Anthony,

I am not convinced that a laptop is needed to be brought to school. I believe a student should learn the methodology of any subject from the school and not the content. So, what is the purpose of a laptop? to communicate with the student? or to find information from a WEB Site? To me all objectives stated in your post can be achieved by a computer at home.

Sincerely yours,
Dr. Cheng

Dear Mr. Anthony,

When I looked at today’s list of missed items and realised that this was just a part of all missing items in school, it created some hesitations about allowing my children to bring valuables to school, and now especially concerning laptops.

However, I do agree that a laptop can be of good use during the lessons and can enrich the love of study.

Kind regards,
Hannie
